MA International Security Studies at UniBwM: Profile

The Master of Arts – Program “International Security Studies” (MISS) is a unique postgraduate program for security professionals offered jointly by the Universität der Bundeswehr München (UniBwM) and the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies (GCMC). In a unique German-American partnership, this program prepares international military and civilian students with some years of experience for executive positions in the public and private sector.

MISS participants profit from the particular strengths of the partnering institutions: The program combines university modules taught by UniBwM professors and selected international faculty with the policy-oriented programs of the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies, a German-American defense institution where students study alongside other government officials from 110 countries. It provides its students with a comprehensive understanding of International Security and connects them to a network of more than 10,000 security professionals around the globe.

Four different study concentrations - Regional Security, Counterterrorism, Cyber Security and Countering Transnational Organized Crime - offer students an opportunity to deepen their understanding and develop professional networks in their specific area of expertise. The program is designed for full and part-time studies and can be completed either as a twelve-month course starting in September or individually via roughly one-month modules. The entire program takes place at the Marshall Center in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a mountain resort in Southern Bavaria.

MA International Security Studies at UniBwM: Career

MISS is designed as a postgraduate professional development program for security professionals from national and international institutions with several years of experience. It aims to provide them with the necessary skills to transition from the tactical/operational level to a more strategic career field, especially in an international context. The program is therefore aimed at field grade officers and their civilian equivalents, particularly those whose duties will include analytical functions. Apart from governmental services, MISS is therefore also a very appropriate preparation for security-related functions in the private economy, i.e. as risk or country analysts.

The Marshall Center's very active Alumni Network of over 10,000 security professionals in 136 countries, which conducts regular Alumni activities in capitals and in Garmisch, is a particularily valuable resource in this regard.
