Tourism Geography and Planning at the University Groningen

Can tourism have a positive impact on communities and destinations? Find it out during Tourism Geography and Planning at Campus Fryslân! This progamme offers international, place-based, critical, and research-oriented approaches towards the tourism industry of today.

  • Study how tourists, visitors, local communities, and the natural and built environment interact
  • Learn about sustainable tourism development from a local, regional, national and global perspective.

Enrich your expertise by working on real-life challenges together with our partners:

  • TAF (Tourism Alliance of Friesland), meant to support the development of the region as a tourist destination
  • Waddenacademie, academic institution standing for socio-economic development of Wadden Sea Region (a UNESCO World Heritage site).
  • Policy makers in the province and in several municipalities in the north of the Netherlands
  • Key players in the field of tourism, such as TUI and World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

Tourism Geography and Planning offers critical insights into the role of the tourism sector.

Tourism Geography and Planning is a track within a wider Msc programme in Cultural Geography, which studies the mutual shaping of human societies and our natural surroundings into cultural landscapes. Within this programme, you can follow a track on the governance of climate adaptation, or in planning geography and tourism.
